Because these folks were contending with various stages of Alzheimer's, there was certainly quite a range of reactions: from a handful who looked pretty disengaged, maybe even stone-faced...to the much large number who were smiling, tapping their feet, otherwise responding enthusiastically to the music. What also happened over about 20 minutes' time--and probably more so over more time, & this certainly accounted for part of the emotional wallop the performance packed--is that some of the disengaged people started to reflect little signs that the music was affecting them...a smile here, a movement of a head or hand there. Powerful stuff”. |
